sound and vision [Oct. 6th, 2007|10:15 pm]

veggie curry stirfry
spoons
slightly stoned veggie chopping fest
bikini kill dance fest
stationary marveling
new custard dishes for a new recipe
homemade apple cider

all resulting in a delightfully inebriated evening with ana (my housemate), rigo (her bf), and casey. oh and the jellybeans....

My new super awesome apartment! [Sep. 22nd, 2007|03:59 pm]
K Building is really nice! Everything is new and clean. I have elevated ceilings. Thus far my housemate seems awesome. Her 2 sisters are staying with her for a bit but they are a lot of fun too. They all did similar middle college stuff so we are automatic friendsies I think. Here are the pictures of my new place.

yes those trees are really the view from the living area

summer you are awesome! Even though I'm at home and I dislike it here I have 2 weeks of absolutely nothing to do. I sit around and sew while watching Cold Case reruns in my pajamas. Then I can go out and have fun with Mr. Casey and fun does not include homework. It is a change of pace for sure.

My only complaint would be the rug burns on my knees from serious Mario Party 8 playing....

Last night I was thinking that perhaps I don't want to be this busy all the time, and so on and so forth. And today that seems silly, I like learning. hehe

Next quarter is coming up at the beginning of April and soon I will be able to enroll in classes for it. It will be my first quarter with upper division classes. I'm hoping to take Literacy and The Book with Jody Greene (lw 106), Global Health & Reproduction with Megan Moodie (fmst 154) and Lit 1. That means next quarter I can declare my majors officially and they are set in stone (more or less). I applied for a summer orientation leadership position. It's basically someone who leads workshops for incoming students and campus tours over summer. I have an interview this friday, it pays $1400 for the 3 weeks you are here for summer, it includes housing, and a meal plan, and $200 to spend on the cafes here, then next quarter when you train for the position on weekends you make $8.50 an hr at your training sessions. It would be a really neat job to have, I have no idea how competative it will be though, I imagine there are a lot of people who return to the job each year. So if this job happens I will be working at the library, volunteering at the women's center, training, and taking upper division courses. I'm letting next quarter stress me out and this one isn't even over yet. gah!

I'm having alot of fun despite all the work, maybe not fun but bits and pieces of niceness. Like right now when I wake up before all my rooommates to sit and read the paper alone. Or searching the internet for neat 50's pin-ups and giggling. This weekend should be great minus all the work because I will have my room to myself (bridget and val are going home) and Casey will have his dorm to hiself.

I haven't posted in a while, one of these days I will post something not out of obligation and therefore it won't be a boring log of my school work

everyone should watch Jesus Camp. It is such a good movie!

Basically it's a documentary on Evangelical Christian children's summer camps, and growing up in an evangelical christian home this movie is absolutely fascinating. most everything about the religion is highlighted, and I don't think the movie comes from a bias standpoint either, it's not for or agaisnt.

I have two problems with the movie though:
-most evangelical (and other christian demoniations) find the idea of a woman minister an abomination under god and the movie mostly shows a woman minister
-also i think it would have been useful to explain that most evangelicals believe you need to have an interpreter for tongues (otherwise it's the devil) and not everyone can speak in tongues, whereas in the movie this church believes everyone can

If you have ever wondered what I mean by evangelical christian and when I start to explain the wackiness, it's all there, and who knows maybe one day I'll meet other evangelicals and we can giggle about that time we cried when we 6 because we thought we were posessed by the devil. anyone want to join my ex-evangelical support group? hehe

I am basically drowning in homework, papers, and books to read.

+ Of Montreal this Wed.
+ our apartment started a neat-o art wall
- ate nasty trash fruit (durian) that Erin brought over, now my burps taste really bad
+ gin and ms. Clara Bow last weekend
- the library has almost no work for me to do when I'm there, 4 hour shifts of looking busy
+/- I will be home this weekend
- having to get a passport quickly/stressfully
+ possibly going to Vancouver with Casey over spring break
+ I'll be a junior at the end of this quarter! (march 22nd)
- I've been sitting down on the weekends and just doing hw from 9-7pm, my butt melts into the chair along with my brain
+ mixing my own teas with herbs from the herb room

This weekend was fantastic! First off I had a blast with Valentina, Elysa, and Erin. A crazy raw food feast, and all sorts of relaxing hang out time.

I'm working on becoming more of a tea expert, after buying individual herbs at the herb room and beginning to mix teas. yummmmy.

My casey came back home and I was very happy to see him. I'll be home the weekend of Feb. 2nd as a side note. At the end of the month we are going to go see Of Montreal at the Attic downtown.

School is busy, but I like it,and now I have to run to lunch. Hope your day is swell!

It took me a little while, but I have a new year's resolution, to distance myself from Casey more. This weekend kinda started that bit all out, he was out of town, and I have miniscule amounts of friends (pretty much none in Santa Cruz) so it wasn't looking like a very happy weekend. However, last night Valentina (one of my roommates) and Elysa came over. Valentina is probably the closest thing I have to a friend but at the same time we live together. After some gin etc etc. we were all excellent friends with intense conversations. We wandered around outside and met other people and it was nice. It wasn't awkward or strained. Today we are headed to the herb room & food bin (excellent food stuff store) and I'm excited!

It is the new year but I really don't feel any different. The year changes, the situations I encounter change, so I guess I change, but eh doesn't really feel that way.

Being at home has been nice in a way, it puts time in perspective now that I'm not stuck in my city on a hill. And of course friends are great. Plus having time to hang out with Casey when neither of us have work or school helps alot. I don't think I could stand being at home this long if it wasn't the fact that the last week in Santa Cruz is finals week. School must have known that it's easier to leave someplace you love when you're sick and tired.

and hey! I got a raise, minimum was just raised to 7.50 woot! What shall I do with the extra 30 cents? haha

cambria was mucho fun. mi favorito location was of course Mantana de Oro outside of Cambria, it's an awesome state park. perhaps perhaps when I feel like spending more time on the internet I will add some pictures.

Today I have fun Santa Barbara plans with mr. casey. Christmas was fun, I've been beading some neat necklaces, I learned how to crochet and made a headband with a cute flower on it. I want to go back to Santa Cruz! Especially now that I have a new set of silverware and will no longer have to use the rusty nasty ones, and a trader joe's gift cirtificate for groceries! even better!

this is a fun site: www.43things.com you can make a life goal listmabobber and see how many people want to do the same thing, etc. etc. my user name is carolync if you would like to locate the things I would like to do

another weekday spent in my living room and kitchen [Dec. 20th, 2006|04:21 pm]
[mood | book-y]
[music |carla bruni]

So the awesomeness that is Bettina Aptheker is mentioned in this horrible book by David Horowitz (hah!). Anyhoo the book is about the 101 most liberal/dangerous/worst professors for America and she is right there at the top next to Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, and bell hooks (who works on african american history and Horowitz claims there is no such thing, it's all "american" history). So the main complaint with Bettina is that she was a communist at one point in her life, is a lesbian, and 3 students out of 100 plus on ratemyprofessor.com commented on her lesbian activism as being unimportant to her class on feminist theories. First I think it's ridiculous that ratemyprofessor.com is used as an actual source in a book! I also decided to go through and count how many in the book were arab or black, which seem to be a sore point for Horowitz, and the toll is at 73 out of 101. hrrrrrrrmmmmmm. anyway I'm having a nice chuckled this afternoon.

I miss knowing every detail about new books at the library. In the moorpark library I had their author's memorized, knew exactly how difficult the plastic protecting the cover was to put on, placed every stamp and barcode, all after I had written out the order card of course. It was nice because they were my friends, now walking in the library to visit Penny and their are all these strangers whose names have not even entered my mind even in passing, or reading Library Journal. That was such a fun part of my life. I've renewed my interest in the women's center and decided that even if I don't feel cool enough to be a part of it, flaking out isn't helping me any. So I will be working again every monday reorganizing the collection, meticulously like the Moorpark College Library, and not rushing through it. Then I can begin to increase the collection, and meet my new friends all over.

What would Marion Davies do?

I'm in love with illusions, so saw me in half [Dec. 19th, 2006|06:36 pm]
[mood | odd]
[music |sufjan stevens]

I don't know why I seem to be unlucky in the way of friendship, whatever it is, it's definately discouraging at times. I think I make a pretty swell friend and I wish other people saw that. Either way the people who are close to me and we get together regularly mean a lot to me and I am glad to have them, I suppose I don't really need more. UCSC is this place where I see all this great interesting people who are smart and we have common interests, so I suppose that is what sucks, so many canidates for people who I would be friends with, and yet I still dont have any close female friends at Santa Cruz. At least in Thousand Oaks I could humor myself with the notion that there isn't anyone I like anyways.

Enough of that self pity! So I've been reading alot and I just finished the book, I Am Charlotte Simmons. It is a pretty good book, kinda slow, but it's about college and well alot of the vapid personalities and drunkards that annoy me some weekends. I went out to the Hope Chest today (so bummed it's closing, I mean come on it's one of the only thrift stores in town) and got this really swanky orange leather? computer bag/purse. It is very becoming! I want to be in class already, I'm not used to such a long christmas break, they've always bored me. I know I'm goign to love 3rd world feminisms and I'm equally excited about U.S. Soc. Movements. If I ever in a million years become crazy enough to get a PHD I think it would be something neat like History of Consciousness. It would be a crazy degree that combined feminism, race studies, pyschocology, history, philosophy, and postmodern theory all in one. Tell me that doesn't sound awesome? Maybe, just maybe, getting ahead of myself.

So the two days after x-mas I will be in Cambria with Casey's family. I'm very excited about that! Way less excited about elephant seals giving birth on the beach....

lay your troubles here where the tugboats cheer [Dec. 15th, 2006|11:03 pm]
[mood | cheerful]
[music |karen dalton]

Do I remember the time we ran across the parking lot in the rain using your sunshade as an umbrella? Of course! I can hardly believe you even asked. Yet it's reassuring to know that some of my favorite memories of a specific year are someone's favorites as well.

I went to see Luke P.'s band, Little League, play tonight and I met up with Christina. Luke has facial hair! Haha can you believe it?! I started laughing when I saw him, what, it's been a year and a half since I last saw him I was just so giddy. It's so nice to see a friendly face. Even though I saw Christina over summer I missed her just as much as if I hadn't seen her in a long time. I can't wait to hear all her stories once she leaves Moorpark on top of exchanging newfound albums.

Being home is weird, once you leave you forget about how difficult it was to live here in the first place. I can't believe my house was as stressful as it is, I'm not even doing anything here but hanging out and still my house is such a place full of tension. It's nice to see THS@MC even though it is changing into a place for white rich christian school drop outs, either way it's the place of many happy times. Plus Mr. Potts is hilarious when he doesn't have to censor himself as a teacher.

I miss Santa Cruz and my happy forest home. More importantly I miss my Casey who is still in Santa Cruz for another week working. One week down, one more to go. It's hard to be alone no matter what city you're in.
